Winter Swim for Charity

WINTER CHARITY CHICKEN WRAP

Over a hundred swimmers are expected to hit the water in Nelson Mandela Bay in support of local charities this Sunday morning. The Nando’s Winter Ocean Racing Series race day will see local families braving the winter chill to take part in a once-off winter race day version of Africa’s largest family lifestyle summer beach event in support of two local charities. Three Reach for the Dream Foundation children, diagnosed with a life threatening illness, will have their dreams realised on Sunday morning whilst all participants and spectators are being urged to come wrapped in a blanket. Teaming up with Kingfisher FM and Finesse magazine’s Wrapped in Faith promotion, the Series is supporting the cause by helping to collect blankets for the homeless. All proceeds will be donated to MES, a shelter for the homeless whose vision is to change the heart of the city by empowering people holistically to live independent, sustainable and meaningful lives.

Whilst the brave will tackle the mild 16 - 17 degree Algoa Bay waters for the 1km Ocean Swim or the 5km Ocean Paddle on Sunday morning, the rest of the families are being encouraged to hit the beach and take part in the fun 5km beach run/walk. For the kids 12 years and younger, there will be a special 1km Quali Juice beach run/walk. All events will take place simultaneously, starting at 10am, followed by a hot prize giving at News Cafe on the Boardwalk.

On the competitive end of the scale, Grey High School’s EP 10km open water swimming champion, Michael Marais, will start as favourite in the 1km Ocean Swim whilst World 5km ORS Beach Champion Marinus Johnson, who has dominated the 5km Beach Run for the past 3 years, has yet to enter the winter race. Grey High scholar, Stuart Laing, will be the paddler to watch in the 5km Ocean Paddle.

"In Nelson Mandela Bay we have terrific all year round weather and some of the greatest beach frontage in the world, so are blessed to be able to host water sport events like the Ocean Racing Series throughout the year." said Race Organiser Mike Zoetmulder from Zports. "Our coastal facilities make the Metro an ideal host for world class water sport events and positions us well to become Africa’s water sport capital."

The Ocean Racing Series is all about family fun with over R10,000 in lucky draw prizes up for grabs, including a whopping Nando’s R1,500 cash prize for one lucky participant. Everyone wins at the Series with all participants receiving a Ciro hot beverage and Cadbury’s chocolate before the event and the first 200 finishers each receiving a Series medal. For the 5km fun runners there will be a H2O water station at the half way turn manned by volunteers from the Rotary Club of PE Sunrise, whilst all the kids taking part in the 1km Beach run/walk will receive a Quali Juice when they finish.

Pre-registration is essential through the website www.OceanRacingSeries.com. Entry forms are available at leading sports stores, Nando’s outlets or at News Cafe for fax entries.Contact Zports on 041 484 7860 for further information.
